Alp Toker - Collabora Ltd.WebKit/Gtk+: An alternative browser engine for the free desktopDeveloped with the explicit goals of being fast, lightweight and embeddable, WebKit is the basis of Apple's Safari browser and several aspects of the MacOS X user experience. In recent times, Apple has opened up the development of WebKit, a fork of the KDE KHTML engine, embracing the open source development model, welcoming new ports and contributors. Collabora Ltd. has gladly taken this opportunity to work together to help bring this powerful desktop component to the Gtk+, GNOME and mobile/embedded community. The WebKit Gtk+ port maintains the ideals of the wider WebKit project: A browser engine should be a re-usable component that can be easily integrated into existing applications. Moreover, it should integrate seamlessly with existing UI conventions, input mechanisms and rendering frameworks to complement the existing desktop platform, enriching it with advanced Web content rather than attempting to replace the desktop with an end-to-end Web-based platform and toolkit. This talk will explore some of the implementation details of the port as well as the benefits and new possibilities that WebKit/Gtk+ can provide over existing solutions. |
