Bryn M. Reeves - Red HatPimp my volumesThe device-mapper provides the kernel-level abstraction to support a number of userspace volume and storage mangagement applications including LVM2, dmraid, device-mapper-multipath and EVMS. Although many administrators are familiar with these high-level tools, the underlying driver components are often less-well-understood. Administrators and developers can benefit from a more complete understanding of these components when managing or developing for systems that use the device-mapper. Beginning with a brief overview of the architecture and organisation of the kernel device-mapper and the interface with userspace this presentation looks beyond the basic capabilities offered by the tools and examines some of the under-the-hood features and functionality with a focus on hands-on troubleshooting, problem replication and experimentation. Practical examples are given for common situations including recovering from a damaged volume group, simulating very large storage devices on small systems and analysing and editing LVM2 metadata. |
